For so many of us, me included, the first thought of the day is “ I didn’t get enough sleep.” The next one is “I don’t have enough time.” Whether this is true for you or not, the thought of not enough is an automatic thought that we don’t even think to question or examine. We spend hours of the day worrying, complaining, listening, and explaining what we don’t have enough of. Before our feet touch the floor in the morning, we are already inadequate, behind; already lacking something. And when it’s time for bed, our minds are racing with all the things we didn’t get done that day. We go to sleep burdened by those thoughts and wake up to that reverie of lack. This mindset of scarcity lives at the heart of our jealousy, our greed, our prejudice, and our arguments with life. And on top of that, we are usually comparing our lives to unattainable, media-driven visions of perfection. I live wholeheartedly. I cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think: no matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough. It’s going to bed at night thinking: no, I am not perfect and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the fact that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.
